Balmain-esque shoulders: is there a more covetable look for Autumn? The trend is pouring downstream, popping up everywhere in jackets and statement dresses. Penney's are about to launch their 'Power Shoulder Blazer', which should sell out in seconds and Dorothy Perkins is even sporting the look in military form with a cosy red coat that means serious winter business.

DP is also home to a black/grey statement shoulder dress that wouldn't look out of place on the Starship Enterprise, but screw it, I'm happy to take my cue from space if it guarantees the death of neon body-con by September.

By the way, 'shoulder' is one of those words that starts to lose all meaning once you type it or say it three or four times.

I'm in the depths of a deeply traumatic wardrobe clear out. The storage capabilities of my two-bedroom mini-house are maxed out and short of filling the oven with shoes or politely asking Mr. Pedestrian to store his clothes in the garden, I have no option but to stop hoarding. There are some items I've only been able to let go of because friends have promised me they'll take good care of them, but what's ace is that, once it's left the house and been carted off to its new life, I don't miss any item one bit.

This could take a while, but it'll be worth it if I can make room for a tonne of new stuff I've been mentally trying on. Stuff with anchors on, to start.

They've been hailed as the 'extreme' trouser choice for SS09, but I'm really coming around to harem pants. Ralph Lauren's version is my faaaavourite, sadly they start at $1,400 for the Crepe de Chine version, rising to an eye-watering $4,799 for the utterly covetable, hand-sewn Sequinned Sheik Pant - and this is at a knock-down, bank breaking sale price.
There are at least three members of my social circle who would knock me down and break my face if I were discovered to have purchased a pair of four-grand pants. That said, I've put in a cosmic order for them, so we'll see what happens.

Back to more pressing issues - the Topshop sales have been better then usual of late, I picked up not one but two ace dresses for €30 in Dublin recently. I'd missed the sign on the rail and I thought the check-out girl was kidding when I arrived at the till delighted with my one €30 tea dress - she told me to turn around and pick another dress for free. I've neglected you. I know.

I'd love to say I was working or studying or whatnot, but the truth is I was partying and I'd totally forgotten you existed. Thanks for the concerned stalker emails though, I'm still alive, I've just discovered that it is in fact possible to function without regular internet access. Who the fuck knew?

A hiatus highlight was Barcelona. I'm sure the Spanish know how to lots of things, but building stuff and partying are definitely two of their best skills. It's clear Gaudi liked to do both at the same time, which I admire, and I particularly liked his church made of tree trunks and ice cream and his Dr. Seuss park.

Primavera Sound rocked as hard as it promised to, treating Estrella and Jaegermeister/Red Bull soaked festivalgoers to three days of bliss and it just so happened we were the for the match, after which thousands of drunk people flooded the streets for a giant celebratory riot, which was brilliant.

Barcelona, the only city that truly deserves to have Queen write a song about it.

Other good stuff: Tapas, €3 bottles of wine, €2.90 Marlboro, warm evenings, hotel roof pools, massive shopping savings in Mango, H&M, Zara, Bershka, paella, ice cream in the middle of the night, cheap taxis, room service, restaurants on boats, coming home to 28 degree weather in Cork.

I had a pair of cream stirrup-pants when I was about nine. I hated them with a passion. The band under my foot drove me nuts and eventually, I managed to sneak them into the hand-me-down bag, where they no doubt haunted a younger relative for some time after that.

Now they're back I'm having second thoughts. I've definitely been influenced slightly by a girl I spotted in Dubland over the weekend who was wearing a black pair of the 'tights' version (Penney's, about €4 or €5) with white patent flats and a long slouchy vest. My camera battery died so I couldn't get a pic but it worked, and I think it might work for me, despite the fact that she was foreign, pin-thin with an inspirational haircut and an expensive tan.

These, however, I'm not so sure about. There's something very Lederhosen about them, ja?

I'm really getting into this exercise thing. I've been for a walk/run (run for five minutes, walk for ten, run for five etc...) every day since Sunday. I'm like Linford fucking Christie over here. You always assume that, should you have to, you could run like the clappers. Scarily, this is not the case. I discovered I can run for five minutes. Any more than that and I throw up, whether there's an murderous axe-wielding rapist running after me or not. I always thought I'd escape, but unless the rapist is more unfit than me, I doubt I would. You can bet he'd have been working out too so I'd have no hope, unless the throwing up put him off, which it might.

What I have noticed is that running and exercise in general punches stress and worry right in the face. When you're trying to figure out if your lung is about to give up, you don't have time for office politics and other assorted brain litter. It's brilliant.

I'm so over winter. I'm actually starting to feel really hard done by because the weather is so bad. I stopped wearing Uggs to try and get myself into the season, but all I've got in return is wet toes and guess what? It fucking sucks, that's what.

Then I saw this, which made me feel simultaneously better and worse. By the time I've done the smart thing and saved for it, the god damn weather better have improved.
Either way, I'll be wearing this, frolicking on a sun lounger and telling everyone who'll listen how fabulously tranquil St. Tropez is now that the banks have stopped giving holiday money to poor people.

It's amazing how fast a trend can grow on you. The first thing I thought when I spotted the 80's blazers making a reappearance was 'Milli Vanilli'. But after further investigation, I can confirm - they're hot and super handy for work.

I tried on a few on Saturday and still haven't find the right one for me, but my favourites so far are the Dorothy Perkins (€60, above) and River Island (below) versions. Skinny jeans, white vest (great selection for €4 in Penney's at the mo, stock up!) and you're good to go.

Credit at the ready - Matthew Williamson debuts his line for H&M on April 23rd with a second deliver on May 14th. The womenswear is a bit last year but the men's line, his first, is what I'm interested in. This studded (presumably faux) mens leather jacket must be mine.
It's the kind of thing that will actually look better in twenty years when your kid steals it. For some unknown reason, H&M heads have removed all pics from the internet but I managed to salvage this (bad) one, awaiting pricing.

I was thinking about this 'The 80's are back!!!' thing that's popping up all over the place so I dug out a few photos to relive what they were like for me. Then I buried them again as quickly as possible.

In case you were wondering, the stylish young lady, front row, second from the left, is not me. I am the tartan mormon with the killer fringe and matching purse, front row, second from the right. Can you handle the hotness?

I love how everyone remembers the 80's differently. For me it was New Kids on the Block, my Walk-Man, high-tops, Orangina, Punky Brewster (I lived in the US), Care Bears, Ninja Turtles, Kool Aid, saying the word 'barf' a lot and wishing my name was Tiffany. For people who weren't 80's kids it was acid wash jeans, court shoes in primary colours, toilet brush perms, bad relationship decisions and shoulder pads. Or patterned drop-waist dresses (support teacher, bottom right) OR an insanely cool leggings, braces and belt combo (April, front row, bottom right)...

For some reason though, every time a magazine do a 'Back to the 1980's' feature it's all about the neon. Sure, there was a bit, especially with that 'work out' look (sloppy t-shirt, leggings, high tops, big hair) my mom was rocking for a while, but there was plenty more to choose from.

I'm usually happy to try a trend, but I've always had a strong aversion to anything 'Jordan' neon. I think a near dangerous obsession with a pair of highlighter-yellow high-tops when I was around nine might be to blame. I remember being horrified when the yellow began to fade and then throwing an all-consuming, slaughterous bitch-fit when my mother decided to throw them out. As my therapist says, they're gone now so it's best to move on.

I'm going to pick and choose this time around, I'm quite drawn to neon accessories as long as they're not hoop earrings worn by a size 20 teenager in a size 8 tracksuit pants. Neon clothing is pushing it. Plus if you're over 16 and actually wear any of this shit it will make you look like a children's party entertainer in the throes of a nervous breakdown.

If my 1980's were really coming back, I'd be cutting up tablecloths in order to craft myself a tartan dress with additional purse (Mr. Pedestrian just pointed out it looks a bit like a sporran - as if being the only Irish kid in the class, armed with a Cork accent that sounded like Klingon wasn't bad enough, they may have thought I was wearing a sporran).

But the 80's aren't really coming back, only the nice bits and a fixation with neon, and this time around you can choose what you want to wear yourself, with little or no input from your mother.

Man I've been busy. I have a giant amount of insanely boring and extremely interesting things I have to do. The boring crap is really harshing my buzz, this cheered me up though, a Miss Selfridge LBD in a fabulously 50's cut. Price TBC, but come on, it's a black dress, the good ones are priceless. Look at the cap sleeves on this - wide enough to balance Pamela Anderson's pre-op knockers and cinched at the waist, in case you don't have one.

A very stylish friend of mine starts chemo in a few weeks so thoughts have turned to bald heads and how best to accessorise them. Bald head or no, I love head scarves, I have a giant box full of them, plucked from discount bins, thrift shops, men's clothing stores, designer sales, brought back to me by friends and family from all over the world. They're so chic, very Côte d'Azur, circa 1960. It's all about how you tie them though, the wrong scarf with the wrong knot will take you from Riviera to Romanian gypsy in less than ten seconds.

I like the idea of chemo, a big blast of some seriously deadly stuff that will kill any nasty stuff it comes into contact with. Sure, it can ruin all the years of hard work you've put into your hair, but on the plus side, you won't have to worry about shaving your legs for a while.

Happily, they can be as cheap or as pricey as you like. I love the one below, (J by Jasper Conran, €18.50, Debenhams). The colour is zingy and the material is soft and silky so it won't irritate your skin, whether you have hair or not. A few from my collection are pictured above.

Ever since I bought my first pair in a senior citizens supply store in Florida, I've been mildly obsessive about giant sunglasses. Not only do they hide a hangover, but they also prevent wrinkles around your eyes and because I smoke, Factor 50 and giant specs are all I have.
I'm happy to experiment with most things, but sunglasses are one thing I refuse to fuck with. The return of small round frames (SS09 Proenza Schouler, Dries Van Noten, Ralph Lauren) puts the fear of god into me. They even manage to look silly on an Olsen. It's happening though, Nasty Gal has clean sold out of their $40 black 'Annie' glasses and we haven't even had an Easter egg yet.
I reckon you need a tiny head to pull these off, so I'm out of luck there, but even with the tiniest Pixie-Geldof head in the world, I have yet to see someone wear these and not look like Nazi scientist.

Just when I was about to make a cosmic order for some hair inspiration, Paramount goes and releases Dynasty Seasons 1 & 2 on DVD. Holy crap! The release date is March 6th, until then feast your eyes on the hotness that is Joan Collins. We came, we saw, we didn't win, but we got absolutely hammered. For future reference, if there's going to be a giant inflatable game of any sort at any event I'd appreciate a heads up so I can stay at home. The lure of Twister was too much. Wild horses couldn't get me off the thing, I think I've broken my thumb, but I won't know for sure until the booze wears off properly.
As if my hangover wasn't bad enough this morning, I got a lovely text message pointing me in the direction of Victor Barry's blog, where there's a lovely picture of my arse displayed for all to see. I mean, it wouldn't be a party if someone didn't get their arse out, would it?

The lovely Val came out of the kitchen and got down on the dancefloor, I finally met Lottie, and after much ado we finally managed to get a picture of us that we both thought was passable.

Like so many things, it started in New York. A number of hours spent browsing the MOMA had this effect on me and I decided that this year's obsession would be finding the perfect camel coat.

I started my search and decided, given that I haven't grown any taller since I was 14 and the right one would probably last me a lifetime, I'd be willing to spend some serious clams on it. I always work out the cost per wear for big spends, like if you'll wear a €100 pair of jeans just twice in the coming year, they're pricey at €50 a go, but if you wear them 50 times, that's not bad for €2 each time.

The amount of money I was willing to part with made the search difficult. If I was paying the equivalent of a mortgage payment for it, this coat HAD to be perfect in every way. Typically, every luxe variation on the classic camel I tried on swamped me and the majority of the newer versions had comedy lapels so ridiculously fucking huge that if a gust of wind caught one I would almost certainly blow away.

There's nothing worse than going into an expensive store, trying on a €1,250 coat and having the sales assistant tell you it looks fabulous when both of you are acutely aware you look like Danny deVito in a hospital gown. I worked in a "posh" shop in Cork once and gave my honest opinion on a number of items to a number of customers who were cramming themselves into a variety of overpriced monstrosities. Needles to say, I only worked there for one day, and even during those eight hours, I was flapped away by the assistant manager (who felt I'd be far better placed polishing bottles of Creed) on four or five occasions when I felt it was my duty, as a human being, to tell the customer the truth.

This morning, to cheer myself up after the bore-fest that is the smear test (stop putting it off - book one for free at CervicalCheck.ie) I went for a walk around town. My first stop was the Oxfam store just off Oliver Plunkett St. I pushed open the door and spotted it immediately... belted, small lapels, button cuffed sleeves, wool/cashmere blend... the perfect camel coat.
It was just sitting there, at the very front of the rack, waiting for me to come and collect it. It fit like a dream - just the right length, not too heavy and ideal for the dress I'm wearing to tonight's Irish Blog Awards!

Pure satisfaction can be an expensive business, but not if you know where to look. The price tag? €12.

I always get really attached to purses and wallets. Once all your stuff is packed into them, they become really important. I always put my donor card towards the front, so if I have a particularly bad day, the doctor can harvest away to her heart's content. I like that idea of being some kind of lucky bag for people with serious illness.

Other items include my Tesco and Dunnes cards, which I rarely use but won't throw out because they've got my name on them, a Meadows and Byrne card (10% of all items- sign up!), two or three voucher type cards I got for various Christmases and birthdays, a 'Good Luck' business card thing with a cringey poem on it that my mom got me, a blood donor card, Boots card, my laser cards (one AIB and a cool sky-blue laser/credit from Halifax), three packets of salt, two packets of Canderel and a mug shot of Mr. Pedestrian that I stole out of his wallet the last time he got passport photos done. It has 'Tesco' printed under the pic, it looks like he's Tesco 'employee of the month.'

Apart from the obvious problem of street-drag (where the hem of your super-flares trails along the pavement, sucking up water until, on a rainy day, it reaches the back of your calf - you freak out and never wear them again) super flares are definitely one of my ten favourite clothing items of all time.
It could be something to do with being small (I'm 5'2, but in magic pavement skimming flares I can wear my most suicidal platforms without anyone noticing, thus adding a sneaky six inches) or it could be the way the wide leg makes your waist look positively waif-like, but they're my fail-safe pants option and I collect them obsessively.

Imagine my glee five minutes ago when these babies arrived in my inbox... meet the Molly Vintage blue piped wide-leg jean, an absolute STEAL at £27.41 (around €30)

By my calculations, that's three boxes of Marlboros, an iced mocha and a copy of InStyle. All of which I can do without ('tis far from iced mochas I was raised)... bargain!

I'm a big fan of Mary T's blog (Caution... Woman at Work). Her hilarious stories about being a busy mum of two are, without doubt, the most powerful contraceptives available online.
Today, I volunteered to be interviewed, now it's my turn... volunteer yourself to go next in a comment box!

1) What is your most memorable fashion disaster?

"I'd erased it from my mind until now, but you asked, so... this is so fucking traumatic... here goes... I was in third year in secondary school and attending a fourth-year fashion show. All the cool people were there. I was wearing my usual skin-tight flares - huge at the bottom, super small up top. I'd been obsessed with getting the jeans as tight as humanly possible without removing a few organs for months and had finally found what I felt were the piece de resistance. I had to lie flat on the bed to get them on, but once I didn't breathe out, they were perfect.
After the first half of the fashion show we left the gym to have a sneaky fag. On the way back in, I took two steps at once. There was a sickening 'riiiiiipping' noise. I knew immediately what it was... the winter breeze on the bare cheeks of my arse was another clue.
My friend, being 15, had almost certainly wet herself with laughter by now but between squeals, managed to give me her coat, which I tied around my waist. I frantically plotted a route to the nearest toilet cubicle to assess the damage - to my jeans and to my life. With said "friend" having uncontrollable giggling fits, we got to the nearest loos with nobody noticing. The mirror revealed that the jeans had ripped spectacularly - from the crotch, right up the back to the waistband. The only saving grace was that I had chosen to wear knickers that day. I couldn't think straight, so "friend" said she'd go and get a needle and thread from the Home Ec room. Ten minutes later, and with me near tears in a toilet cubicle, she arrived back. With the Home Ec teacher and at least ten people she'd invited along the way. The Home Ec teacher, a rather butch lesbian, demanded I take off the jeans and hand them over the door.
Wincing in mortification I took them off and stood in my knickers for 30 minutes while she stitched them in front of the assembled audience. By the next morning, word had spread like wildfire across the school and the story had grown enormous legs. One version was that I'd been knickerless. Another was that it had happened on the catwalk. This is the first time I've relived that episode. And the last.

2) You read in Vogue that Shell Suits are making a come back and are going to be big for autumn / winter. Attached to the article is a picture of Agyness Deyn wearing one. What do you write in your blog about this?

"Model exposed as simpleton, world indifferent."

3) Amy Winehouse and Pete Doherty invite you out for a quiet drink. You have a very important job interterview at 9:00am the following morning. Do you accept their invitation?

"Of course. I'd politely decline the crack though and if either of them wanted to touch me, which they inevitably would, they'd have to wash their hands first."

4) A good friend is in desperate need of a makeover but doesn't know it. How do you address this problem?

"This is a tricky one. You don't want to hurt anyone's feelings, so it's generally best to delete them from your social networking friends lists and change your number post haste. If, in time, they correct the problem, simply reintroduce yourself as if you've never met. Crisis averted."

5) Your airline loses your luggage on your outbound journey and offer you £100 to get what you need until they find it. What do you buy?

"I always bring my make-up in my carry-on luggage along with cigarettes and a box of matches (if I have seconds left to live an oxygen mask is not going to cut it, plus you never know when you might need something to offer a terrorist in exchange for your life.) £100 is quite generous of them actually, I'll fly with them again. My list would include the following:

Grey tights or knee socks, depending on the climate
A long T-shirt
A huge scarf
An oversized cardigan
Pairs of knickers (3)
Cigarettes (200)
Bottle of wine (1-2)
